Westchester Business Donates Birdfeeders and a Full Year's Supply
of Seed to Classrooms

Lighting By Marks, a Pleasantville–based designer and
installer of landscape lighting designs, joins forces with the National Audubon
Society, Bedford Chapter, to participate in the widely acclaimed Project
Feeder Watch which funds bird feeders and a year's supply of bird seed,
ideally for a fifth–grade classroom. In fact, all four elementary schools in the
Katonah–Lewisboro School District (Katonah Elementary School, Lewisboro
Elementary School, Increase Miller, and Meadow Pond) received funding to pay for
feeders and the seed supply.
"I spend so much time enhancing people's landscaping so they
can see things better in the dark, I thought it would be fun to give the kids
something to marvel at during the normal school day. I have been talking to the
Bedford Audubon Society about a donation of in–kind services to improve their
property on Todd Road, Bylane Farm. But before Bylane was a reality as it is
today, the local chapter sold me on the feeders and the seed as a good way to
get involved initially," remarked Mark Mosello, owner of Lighting By Marks.
Bedford Audubon approached the school district over a year
ago, but a program of this scope cannot just be assumed to fit into the
curriculum. "We were delighted that we made the grade, so to speak, for
the 2002–2003 school year," noted John Askildsen, local chapter president.
"These kinds of programs are exactly what we're trying to focus our neighbors on
to get them to appreciate the sanctity of the natural environment, and the need
to respect land, open space, and a chemical–free environment. But as a volunteer
organization, we lack the manpower to do it all ourselves. Here's where we can
genuinely thank the school district, the permission–granting teachers—they fill
the feeders as often as needed—and generous donors like Mark Mosello."
