Cameron Rutt Named Hawk Watcher as Butler Sanctuary Count Begins

Bedford Audubon is pleased to announce that Cameron Rutt will be the hawk watcher at the Chestnut Ridge Hawk Watch at the Arthur Butler Sanctuary in Bedford, New York. Click for more information about the Chestnut Ridge Hawk Watch.

Cameron has recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree with honors in biology from Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania. He brings considerable field birding experience with him including participation in auditory bird surveys, mist netting and bird banding, and countless hours scanning the skies for raptors at Waggoner’s Gap, Hawk Mountain, and Cape May.

On a personal note, Cameron has recorded close to 600 species of birds in the ABA recording area and has recently been appointed to the Pennsylvania Ornithological Records Committee. Come meet Cameron at the Hawk Watch. He will be on duty from 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Monday–Saturday from August 22 through November 20. (Another Hawk Watcher will be on duty on Sundays.)

Dr. Bruce Beehler and Bowerbird in FojasFeatured on CBS 60 Minutes on December 16, 2007, and on WNYC radio on August 8, 2008, the eminent ornithologist, ecologist, and conservationist Bruce Beehler of Conservation International will present a lecture about his two trips in 2005 and 2007 to the Foja Mountains in the Indonesian section of New Guinea—“a place as close to the Garden of Eden as you're going to find on Earth,” untouched by humans, a world of strange and hauntingly beautiful birds, some of them never before seen by man. The presentation will include video clips of displays of the Golden-fronted Bowerbird and Black Sicklebill.

Bruce Beehler has spent much of his scientific career studying the birds of the Southwest Pacific and South Asia. After conducting predoctoral and doctoral fieldwork in Papua New Guinea, Beehler worked for 10 years at the National Museum of Natural History, followed by stints at the Wildlife Conservation Society, U.S. Department of State, and Counterpart International. Today he leads a research program that focuses on the island of New Guinea.

Beehler is author or coauthor of several natural history books, including Birds of New Guinea (Princeton), The Birds of Paradise (Oxford), A Naturalist in New Guinea (Texas), A Biodiversity Assessment for Papua New Guinea (Biodiversity Support Program), and Ecology of Papua (Periplus). His latest book from Yale, Lost Worlds, focuses on the rainforests of the world. It will be for sale at the lecture and can be signed by the author.
